Tell us what you want built or fixed and roughly where. We reply to set a time to walk the site. Rather talk? Call (737) 201-0849.
Tell us whether it is a public sidewalk panel, a front walk to the door, or a path around the side of the house. If the city has sent you a notice, include a photo of it.
- We measure the panels, the cross slope and any trip lips.
- We check whether the work is in the right-of-way.
- The scope names the permit, dowels, finish and cure.
Sidewalk Contractors Near Me: Who Repairs the Public Walk?
In a lot of cities the public sidewalk is the city’s problem. In Pflugerville it is the abutting owner’s. City Code §130.13 says that when a sidewalk, driveway, curb, gutter or appurtenance becomes defective or hazardous, the owner of the property next to it has to repair it. The city engineer can send written notice, the owner then has 30 days, and an owner who ignores it can be charged with a misdemeanor.
A notice isn’t the only reason to act. A trip lip in front of your house is a hazard to every neighbor walking a dog past it. Replacing the raised or sunken panel, doweled to its neighbors, fixes it for good.
Sidewalk Concrete Contractors and the City’s Doweled-Joint Rule
Pflugerville allows sidewalks to be poured continuously without joints. Where joints are used, §150.28 is specific: #3 rebar dowels, 12 in. long, spaced no more than 24 in. on center across the joint. The dowels keep panels from sliding up and down past each other as the clay moves.
Because the walk is in the street right-of-way, three more rules apply: it is bedded on at least two inches of clean washed sand (§150.23(A)), a ramp goes in wherever it meets a street (§150.23(D)), and expansion joints go in between new and existing concrete (§150.23(C)). While the work is open, 3 ft by 3 ft signs name the permit holder and the contractor (§96.17).
Sidewalk Cross Slope, Ramps and Driveway Crossings
A walk that looks flat may not be. The cross slope is what decides whether a stroller, a wheelchair or a walker drifts toward the street.
Cross-Slope Level: test a walk’s tilt
Set the walk’s tilt with Flatter and Steeper (or the arrow keys) and watch the limits it passes or fails cross out.
3.0% to start. Tilt it to compare.
- A walk may tilt no more than 2% across its width (TxDOT Item 531), about a quarter inch per foot.
- A curb ramp’s running slope may reach 8.3%, and the walk has to meet it cleanly.
- The flares on each side of a ramp may reach 10%.
- 14% is the most the UDC allows even on a driveway; a walk that steep wants steps.
Slope is rise over run; the drawing exaggerates the tilt.
Where a driveway crosses the walk, Pflugerville’s UDC holds the driveway to the walk’s 2% cross slope for at least 3 ft, so the walk stays a walk all the way across. If your driveway approach is being replaced too, both are built in the same pour so the crossing comes out right.
Concrete Sidewalk Installation on Clay, Start to Finish
- Permit and notice. Right-of-way permit, 48 hours’ notice to Engineering, and our own 811 locate ticket.
- Saw-cut and remove. The old panels cut at clean lines and hauled off; curbs saw-cut, not broken.
- Base. Soft clay dug out and replaced, then at least two inches of clean washed sand under right-of-way flatwork.
- Forms and dowels. Forms set to line and cross slope, and #3 dowels drilled into neighboring panels at every joint.
- Concrete and finish. TxDOT Class A concrete for sidewalks is the benchmark, finished with a broom across the walk for traction.
- Cure. At least 72 hours of curing before it is opened, the same minimum TxDOT uses for sidewalks.
Tamp: the trench under a new walk
Where a utility trench crosses under a walk, Pflugerville wants it backfilled with wetted sand or mechanically compacted fill, no rock over half an inch (City Code §150.29). See why: pick a method, run four passes, then pour and walk on it.
Choose how the fill goes in, then run the compactor.
- Thin lifts: Compacted a lift at a time, the trench is as firm as the ground beside it. The new panel sits level with its doweled neighbors and stays that way, so no trip lip forms over the trench line.
- One deep dump: A trench filled in one go and tamped on top settles under the walk within a season or two. The panel over it drops or cracks along the trench, and keeping that walk in repair is the property owner’s job (City Code §130.13).
Drawing not to scale; the sag is exaggerated so you can see it.
Before the Saw: Locates on a Sidewalk Frontage
The strip between your yard and the street is where water, gas, power and cable all cross. Every sidewalk job starts with locates.
Flag Key: the marks you’ll see along the walk
Tap a flag to plant it on the sample frontage. The white dashes mark the sidewalk panels to be replaced.
Tap a flag to see what it marks along the street.
| Colour | Marks | What it means on your lot |
|---|---|---|
| White | Proposed excavation | White outlines the panels coming out, so the locate covers the whole strip along the street. |
| Pink | Temporary survey markings | Survey marks along the frontage, often left from the subdivision work. Nothing buried. |
| Red | Electric power lines, cables, conduit | Power often crosses under the walk from the transformer box toward the house. |
| Yellow | Gas, oil, steam, petroleum | The gas service crosses the frontage to the meter and can sit shallow near the walk. |
| Orange | Communication, alarm or signal lines, cables, conduit | Fiber and cable drops cross under walks; the saw stays clear of the marks. |
| Blue | Potable water | The meter box often sits just behind the curb, so nearby panels come out carefully. |
| Purple | Reclaimed water, irrigation and slurry lines | Sprinkler lines and heads along the walk are private and unmarked, and usually need moving. |
| Green | Sewers and drain lines | The sewer lateral crosses under the walk; a cleanout near it shows the route. |

Concrete Walkway Contractors Who Pour the Path to Your Door
A front walk from the drive to the door is on your own lot, so the right-of-way rules don’t apply, but the same habits do: a compacted base, a fall that sheds water away from the house, and joints close enough that cracks land where they should. A walk that holds water against the foundation is worse than no walk at all.
Side paths to a gate or a shed are often narrow and wind around beds, so they get control joints at every change of direction. For a decorative look, a stamped border or a colored band works well on a walk; the stamped concrete page has the options. For the whole picture of what we pour, see our Pflugerville concrete contractor page.
Concrete Sidewalk Cost: Panels, Permits and Ramps
Sidewalk work is priced by what comes out and what goes back. The main movers are the number of panels, saw-cutting and haul-off, base repair under the old panels, drilling and setting dowels at every joint, a ramp if one is required, and the right-of-way permit and signage.
Doing the sidewalk with a driveway approach in the same visit usually costs less than doing them separately: one permit, one mobilization, one pour. If a panel is cracked but level, a repair may be enough.
Sidewalk Questions From Pflugerville Homeowners
In Pflugerville, the owner of the property next to it. City Code §130.13 makes it the abutting owner’s duty to repair a defective sidewalk, driveway, curb or gutter, and gives 30 days after written notice from the city.
Plan on it. The public sidewalk sits in the right-of-way, removing it counts as excavation under §96.03, and the only exceptions in §96.15 are small utility connections. A right-of-way permit from Development Engineering comes first, then 48 hours’ notice before work starts.
So neighboring panels stay level with each other. Where a Pflugerville sidewalk has joints, §150.28 calls for #3 rebar dowels 12 in. long, at least every 24 in., across each joint. Panels that can’t slide up or down past each other don’t form trip lips.
That depends on the weather and the mix, so the scope gives a date. TxDOT’s sidewalk spec cures new walks for at least 72 hours, and we keep foot traffic, bikes and especially cars off until the curing is done.
The lifted panels can be replaced, but the root decides whether the fix lasts. Before cutting a large root, have an arborist look; cutting the wrong one can hurt or destabilize the tree. Sometimes the walk can be reset on a slightly different line instead.
Yes. Pflugerville requires a ramp wherever a sidewalk meets a street (§150.23(D)), and TxDOT’s sidewalk spec caps a curb ramp’s running slope at 8.3% and its side flares at 10%. The city’s standard details set the rest of the ramp, and we build to them.
